Yorkshire Wold’s Teacher Training offers STEM undergraduates in their penultimate (second) year, the opportunity to earn £1200 in June/July on the Department for Education Internship scheme to learn about teaching Maths and/or Physics at secondary school level.
The internships are 4 weeks-long and coordinated through Yorkshire Wolds Teacher Training. The internships are available at our trust schools which are situated across Hull and The East Riding of Yorkshire.
The programme is aimed at STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics) undergraduates who are seriously considering a future career in secondary education teaching Mathematics and/or Physics and who wish to gain work experience in our successful secondary schools as part of The Education Alliance.
Chemistry undergraduates, or joint honours Chemistry/Physics undergraduates are also welcome to apply and should make clear whether they are more interested in learning about Mathematics or Physics teaching during their internship. We would also welcome registrations of interest from undergraduates in their penultimate year on other STEM courses or from those reading for other degrees who have A-level Mathematics or Physics (at least Grade B or above) and a genuine interest in a teaching career in Maths or Physics.
During your internship at Yorkshire Wolds Teacher Training you will have the chance to learn alongside outstanding teachers and mentors and benefit from a carefully planned and structured training programme to prepare you to plan and teach your own lessons and develop your own resources by the end of the placement. You will be offered the chance to take part in a series of masterclasses on differentiation, resource development safeguarding and other professional responsibilities of teachers whilst also engaging in discussions with a range of school staff and leaders to explore the various career paths and specialisms which exist in schools at classroom teacher and senior management level. You will also be given the opportunity to work with our charity school in Kenya to support teachers there!

We have supported the Kingston Jr Academy for a number of years and have helped raise thousands of pounds to build new facilities and equipment, provided the students with better uniforms and meal choices and extended their curriculum with enrichment opportunities and sports clubs. Our interns will be given the opportunity to extend this support by working with the staff at the school to develop teaching and learning further by creating new, innovative teaching resources there.
This combination of experience, skills development and project work with our charity school on our Internship Scheme will certainly create a CV and job application like no other and will also support our drive to help other schools overseas to improve their own teaching standards and the limitless potential of their pupils.

Trust Director of Employability and Internship Coordinator at YWTT Teaching School Alliance, Sarah Barley, said;
“There is a real need to recruit high quality physics and mathematics teachers into schools across Hull and The East Riding of Yorkshire. Our aim through delivering this scheme will be to inspire all interns to apply for initial teacher training courses in 2021-2022, to complete this training in Hull and East Riding Schools, and to go on to become the high quality physics and mathematics teachers that our local children need.
“We are really proud of the course that we have created for our interns as it will allow them to develop the key skills needed for a career in teaching but will also give them the opportunity to contribute to our ethical values when working with our charity school in Kenya to support teacher training there”.
