The Teacher Training Programme
“YWTT have supported me every step of the way through this journey, and I could not recommend this course enough!”
The YWTT Programme has been coherently designed and sequenced to support you to develop the skills and knowledge required to become a highly effective, evidence informed teacher, able to change the lives of the children you teach. It contains three overlapping components delivered through integrated strands.
- Learning to teach
- Professional Studies Programme
- School Based Training Programme
- Learning to teach a subject
- Subject Immersion Programme
- School Based Subject Training Programme
- Learning to be a teacher
- Professional Development Programme
- PGCE Programme
- Supported Self Study Programme
The professional studies programme is delivered by teaching experts, some of whom work for national education organisations including the Education Endowment Foundation.
You will work closely with your YWTT tutor, an excellent teacher who will support your development throughout the course. They will meet with you weekly to gain a deep understanding of your specific needs and progress, allowing them to design and deliver bespoke intensive training placements in their school.
School placements are carefully structured to ensure the gradual development of your teaching across both primary Key Stages. Spending Monday to Thursday in school allows you to continually apply and refine your developing knowledge and skills. Your mentor in each placement school will support you daily, giving you regular formative feedback through observation and weekly mentor meetings. They also work closely with your tutor to design and deliver the school based training programme.
YWTT History Trainee Becca tells us of her journey into teaching
“My experience with YWTT has been amazing. I truly appreciate all the support I have been given by the YWTT team and other trainees.”
Training with disabilities and other needs
Yorkshire Wolds Teacher Training is committed to delivering high quality teacher training that meets the diverse needs of its trainee population, ensuring that no individual or group is disadvantaged. All Yorkshire Wolds trainees are allocated a tutor who will work with each individual throughout the programme, celebrating progress, devising bespoke programmes to respond to individual needs and helping them overcome the challenges they may face.
Additional Support Plans and Wellness Action plans are discussed and implemented where appropriate. This system has effectively supported past trainees with a variety of needs, including dyslexia, physical, hearing and visual impairments.
“Picking just one highlight of my time at YWTT is impossible. During my teacher training journey, I received great support from the staff at YWTT.
I absolutely loved both of my placement schools and they did not only shape me into a great teacher, but they also helped me grow as a person.”
School placements
Yorkshire Wolds Teacher Training works in partnership with over 90 schools across the East Riding of Yorkshire, Hull and Lincolnshire. We have well over a hundred expert mentors in our partner schools so committed to developing the next generation of great teachers that 88% of them have voluntarily completed a coaching & mentoring qualification in addition to the ongoing mentor training.
We have a huge range of diversity across our partnership, with coastal, rural, urban, special schools and alternative provision. Our partner schools serve diverse communities of children giving our trainees the opportunity to develop a deep understanding of the regional educational landscape. Some of our schools are tiny rural primary schools, others are big junior or infants schools. All our secondary trainees will undertake at least one placement in an 11-18 school, giving them the opportunity to experience post sixteen teaching.
Trainees are given the opportunity to place possible placement schools in order of their preference and we understand that the appropriate match between trainee and school mentor is crucial to maximise your development. Therefore, we use your preferences, your geographical location and information collated from application and interview processes to carefully match you to your mentor and host school.
Trainees will undertake two teaching placements in diverse schools, our priority is to secure placements that work for you. In addition to considering your training needs when planning placements we will ask you to identify considerations relating to commuting distances and family needs. The programme is designed to support you develop through a range of different placement experiences, including intensive training and practice and immersion days in different school settings. You will also have the opportunity to undertake an elective placement in a setting of your choice allowing you to broaden and deepen your understanding of the educational landscape.
